Gates Pass

Gates Pass is along a scenic drive I recommend to every visitor to the Tucson metropolitan area. It's an incredible overlook from which one can see a bit of the Tucson valley, Old Tucson, Kitt Peak, and just some lovely vistas.

The pass is named after Thomas Gates, who in 1883 decided to create the "shortcut" through the Tucson mountains. When you visit, just imagine traversing the area with wagon and ox.

Tucson sunsets are part of our desert trademark, and the sight is simply stunning. A 15 minute drive past I-10, west on Speedway will have you arriving for an incredible, brilliant sunset which shouldn't be missed!

The road itself is steep, winding, and narrow. There is a lookout point at the top and bottom of the steepest area, and folks regularly follow the paths to the observation area, complete with guides to the various vista points.

Don't miss Gates Pass on your next visit to Tucson!
